Biography

Kristina Butaeva is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Economics, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She got her Candidate of Science degree in Economics from the Lomonosov Moscow State University before getting her PhD in Social Science from HKUST in 2021. Before joining HKUST in 2016-2018 she was a Research Fellow in the Center for the Study of Diversity and Social Interactions at the New Economic School (NES CSDSI, Moscow), and spent six months in the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on income inequality, income mobility, and social diversity. Her studies on income inequality explore measurement issues and propose new methods for robust estimation of Gini indices in Russia and China. She also examines regional variation in income inequality and income mobility in China. Currently, she takes part in the project on intergenerational social mobility in China, Russia, and the US, jointly with Professor Albert Park.
