The Center celebrated its official launch with a panel discussion on the “Challenges facing Competition Policy in Hong Kong and Asia.” Following Dean Kar Yan TAM’s welcoming remarks, Professor Albert Park, Director of CEP and Chair Professor of Economics, outlined the Center’s mission focuses on offering high-quality research insights into the effectiveness of economic policies and programs.

During the event, program leaders Professors Sujata VISARIA and Siu Fai LEUNG, Department of Economics, also introduced two initially established research programs at CEP – the Development Economics Action Research (DEAR) and Antitrust and Competition Policy. Distinguished CEP advisory board members also made congratulatory remarks.

With Professor Xinyu HUA, hosting the panel discussion, Ms. Anna WU, Founding Chair of the Hong Kong Competition Commission, shared the efforts that the Commission made to implement the Competition Ordinance in Hong Kong effectively. Professor Reiko AIKO, Commissioner of the Japan Fair Trade Commission, discussed the challenges of regulating digital platforms in Japan, and Professor Guofu TAN, Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California, explained the role that economic analysis plays in evaluating whether business practices violated antitrust regulations and discussed potential antitrust issues in platform markets.
