Lunchtime Brown-bag Seminars

The 16th China Economics Summer Institute

We are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the 16th China Economics Summer Institute (CESI), which took place on August 23-24, 2023, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), hosted by the HKUST Center for Economic Policy and HKUST Department of Economics. The objective of CESI is to create a network and community of top level scholars working on Chinese economic development.

Roundtable meeting on Empowerment and Wellness of Migrant Domestic Workers: Explorations for Cross-sector Collaborations between Field & Academic Experts
Migrant domestic workers (MDWs) contribute to Hong Kong society both through their care work, and by enabling labour force participation, mainly of Hong Kong women. Many observers implicitly assume this is “win-win” for both sides, and specifically that this “importation” of low-skilled labour creates both short and long-term gain for the migrants.

On November 23, the Center for Economic Policy and HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies (IEMS) jointly organized a book launch event for the new book “One Currency, Two Markets: China’s Attempt to Internationalize the Renminbi” (Cambridge University Press, September 2021) authored by Professor Edwin Lai, Professor of Department of Economics and Associate Director of Center for Economic Policy at HKUST. The book launch started with brief remarks by the moderator Professor Albert Park, the director of the Center for Economic Policy.

HCEO-CEP-CREC Virtual Summer School on Socioeconomic Inequality 2021
The Center for Economic Policy hosted the Virtual Summer School on Socioeconomic Inequality 2021 for PhD students in economics and other social sciences from August 9 to August 13. The program was co-organized with the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group (HCEO) of the University of Chicago and the China-Russia Eurasian Studies Center (CREC)-a joint center established by HKUST Society Hub, HKUST Business School, New Economic School, and Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO.
