Lunchtime Brown-bag Seminars
The Center for Economic Policy is organizing lunchtime brown-bag seminars in Fall term at LSK6045. It will be opened to all faculty and students who want to attend. In the one-hour seminar, there will be a presentation by CEP research affiliates, postdoctoral fellow or HKUST PhD students, followed by a Q&A session.

Seminar - China’s Economy and Asia’s Rise
Professor Park will assess the cyclical and structural factors affecting China’s growth prospects and how China is impacting economic dynamism in the region. Topics included the implications of China’s recent property sector downturn, how geopolitical fragmentation is affecting China’s trade and investment relationships and growth prospects in the region, and the potential for China to contribute positively to the development of other countries via outbound FDI and by leading on climate change action.

The objective of CESI is to create a network and community of top level scholars working on Chinese economic development.

Roundtable meeting on Empowerment and Wellness of Migrant Domestic Workers: Explorations for Cross-sector Collaborations between Field & Academic Experts
Migrant domestic workers (MDWs) contribute to Hong Kong society both through their care work, and by enabling labour force participation, mainly of Hong Kong women. Many observers implicitly assume this is “win-win” for both sides, and specifically that this “importation” of low-skilled labour creates both short and long-term gain for the migrants.

ECON-CEP UG Virtual Research Showcase
The Department of Economics and the Center for Economic Policy jointly organized the first ever ECON-CEP UG Virtual Research Showcase on June 13. The event provided a stage for the high-quality research done by our undergraduate students through the ECON 4670 research and communication course, UROP projects, and CEP student research internships. Professor Wooyoung Lim, UG Programs Coordinator of Department of Economics, and Professor Sujata Visaria, Director of Center for Economic Policy hosted. Fifteen faculty members attended.

Central Bank Digital Currencies: Implementation, Applications and Challenges
In 2020, China rolled out its version of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) in Shenzhen. This calls into question the implementation, applications, and challenges of CBDC. In this timely webinar moderated by Professor Edwin Lai of HKUST Center for Economic Policy, Professor Barry Eichengreen of UC Berkeley and Mr. Yong Xia, Global Head of HSBC Lab, discussed the purposes and advantages of CBDC as well as its impact on financial stability.
